Ask The Pastor

March 9, 2001

Dear Friend,

You asked:

> Why does Zachariah contain a strong warning against all those who will
> not keep the Feast of Tabernacles after the nations had come against
> Jerusalem? I always thought this was refering to the Millenium after
> Armagedon.

It is speaking of the millennium. Lots of things will be happening that are exclusive to that time.

> But if it's true for the future, shouldn't it apply to us now in this
> dispensation of grace, or the church age; after the first fulfillment of
> this prophecy when Nero came and practically destroyed Jerusalem?

There is no reason for it to apply now. In the millennium 'Christian' Israel will be the ruling nation in the earth. The issue of the 'Feast of Booths' will be an instrument to teach the nations the history of redemption.

As for it applying now, this would not be in the spirit of the new covenant. The Lord is not trying to make the Church into a Jewish institution. We have definite instructions.

For example, it says, "No one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day - things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ." (Col2:16,17)

> My former pastor recently met a Messianic Jew as she was on a tour to
> the Holy Land who informed her that there is one feast that Christians
> are mistaken not to be keeping -- this one. Are we keeping it in some
> sort of spiritual way?

There is no spiritual purpose for those been born again to keep festivals. The festivals were teaching instruments until the Christ should come. We now have His reality. To return to festivals would be a digression of our spiritual life. This is what the apostle was teaching. Why live in a shadow when we have the reality?

The Messianic Jew is mistaken.
