Ask The Pastor

Hi Melanie,

A Christian's true beauty is always a thing of the heart. It is the glow of Jesus in our lives that makes us attractive. However, wearing makeup or jewelry in a modest fashion is never forbidden in the Scriptures. The key is not to allow these things cause us to appear worldly. Once again 'modesty' is the key.

> I am not sure what I believe about them but I lean more toward the

> side of makeup not being allowed.

Let the Holy Spirit guide you in what your appearance should be. The term 'modesty' (aidos) speaks to a reverence for that which is good, to be becoming, or well-arranged. The ancient people of God always wanted to appear their best when coming in times of worship. This is some of what Paul has in mind.

To be immodest would be for a man or woman to 'uncover' or 'reveal' parts of their body that especially draw attention to their sexuality, that is, where a woman wears a low cut dress so that some of her breasts are revealed, or wears a dress what shows more of her legs than would be proper.

Certainly the Bible is against wearing makeup that would give God's woman an appearance of worldliness. Paul said that we are not to let the world to conform us to its mold. But are the people of God expressly forbidden to wear any makeup at all? No, I can't find any Scripture for this. So it all comes back to personal conscience.

Hope I've helped a bit.

Blessings,

Buddy
