"Ask the Pastor"

Whether or not to celebrate Christians is a personal decision. It depends on
your own heart. Many Christians don't celebrate because of its pagan roots, or
because of its commercialism, or because it comes to us by way of the Roman
Catholic system. Others learn where to draw lines in their celebration of Christmas.
And then there are those who see nothing wrong with it at all.

Is it alright to celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25th, even though we
know that date does come to us out of paganism? It depends on the person.
Christmas as we know it is both a religious and a secular celebration. It is a
time of great mixture. Many people care nothing for Jesus, they simply love the
party atmosphere. For others it is a time of worship.

So, yes, I think it is alright to celebrate Christmas, if you can do it with a
proper understanding, and, if you know where to draw the lines in your own life.

There is one thing left to be said. Christmas has become a world-wide
celebration irrespective of religion. In Israel, people are known to put up
Christmas trees, to the horror of the Orthodox Jews. In Japan they put up trees,
also in China. My advice to any believer who is struggling in this area is not
to let it become a souring point. Use the season to your own advantage, and to
the advantage of the kingdom of God. What greater opportunity is there to share
the true testimony of Jesus Christ. (Simply protect your own heart from all that
doesn't belong to Christ Jesus.)
